One of the most exciting newcomers to the fashion blogosphere, we talk to If You Seek Style’s Caylee.
Second in our series is stylish newcomer Caylee Willett from If You Seek Style. She may have only been blogging since last year, but she’s already been made a Chictopia Style Icon and a WhoWhatWear Myspace Muse, as well as appearing on Knightcat and Forever21.
Why did you start blogging?
Living in a city (Indianapolis) that is not interested in fashion the way that other cities are (places like NYC, LA, and Chicago), I don’t know anyone personally who shares my interest in fashion, so I started blogging as a way to connect with and become a part of a community with others who share my passion. It’s just a great creative outlet where I can post some of my own outfits and rant and rave about my current obsessions to people who understand the way that I’m feeling. My interest in fashion actually sparked when I came across my first fashion blog two years ago. I’ve known since then that I wanted to blog, but I took those few years to figure out my personal style and get comfortable enough with myself to start blogging.
Who are your favourite bloggers?
Oh this is a toughie because I follow and admire so many style bloggers from around the world. Cat Khan from KnightCat is my favorite for inspirational images, as well as Tommy Ton from Jak & Jil, Craig from AltamiraNYC (model-off-duty pics), Daniel and Caroline from Stockholm Street Style, and the ladies behind LeFashion, Fashion Gone Rogue, and Studded Hearts. As for personal style blogs, some of my favorite bloggers are Elin Kling from “Style By Kling”, Carolina from “Fashion Squad”, Caroline from “Caroline’s Mode”, Ida from “Life By Ida”, and Columbine from “Columbine Smille”. As you can see, my favorite bloggers are Scandinavian. I cannot get enough of the ladies over there and their incredible style! I’m missing so many more amazing bloggers from my favorites list, but I tried to keep it short!
Do you have any style icons?
One if not the biggest influence for me when it comes to fashion is model-off-duty style. My aesthetic is exactly like theirs, and my favorite girls are Dree Hemmingway, Daria Werbowy, Lily Donaldson, Maryna Linchuk, Noot Seear, Natasha Poly, Anja Rubik, and Erin Wasson. I also really love Kate Lanphear; everything about her is perfect. And I’m going to have to add Elin Kling in there again. Again, I am so inspired by Scandinavians and her blog was one of my biggest influences when I was first getting into fashion and defining my personal style, so she is definitely an icon of mine. To be honest, most of my style icons are bloggers like my favorites in the answer above!
What’s the best thing about being a blogger…
I am going to have to go along the lines of what I wrote above, which is being part of an online community of incredibly stylish people from all around the globe, and the ability to share your passion with them. It gets even better if you can be an inspiration to someone else. It’s amazing.
…and the worst?
Definitely the time and effort that it takes to post at least every other day. I’m a full-time student and I also work part-time, so the amount of time in a day that I have for leisure activities like blogging is minimal. I do not have a photographer to take my outfit pictures (I’m still trying to convince my boyfriend!), so that means I have to set the self-timer on the camera and go back and forth, back and forth, until I get a few good shots. That being said, the time and effort that it takes is worth it, because I love blogging.
What’s your favourite trend from the upcoming season?
To reiterate what everyone else is saying: fur (faux of course)! I’ve never been more into this trend than I am right now; currently I have two fur vests that I cannot seem to stop wearing.
If you could sum up your style in three words, what would they be?
Simple with edge.
What’s your biggest fashion no-no?
Following a trend that doesn’t fit with your personal style and preferences, just because it is a trend. For example, I shy away from bright colors and much prefer neutrals; I feel that they work better for me and fit with my style more than crazy bright shades. No matter what hot jewel tone is in for fall or how cool that Chanel green nail polish may be, it’s not “me”, so I’m not going to wear it.
What’s your top fashion tip?
Define your style, and know what you like and what looks good on you – it makes shopping easier and putting outfits together easier when you have an edited closet full of things you know you’ll wear again and again, and can easily mix and match your wardrobe to create multiple outfits.
What do you love most about fashion?
Fashion is present in all aspects of life, but what I really love is the ability to express yourself through your clothing. I’ve always been a very visual person so obviously I like the aesthetics of a great outfit, but I just love putting together an outfit based on my mood and current inspiration and using my creativity to play with different silhouettes and textures and colors. I also love the thrill of the hunt and then finding that perfect piece – fashion is all about having fun.
