Britney ‘borrowing’ your jewellery whilst on a shoot? Just a day in the life of blogger Wendy Brandes…
Well, we couldn’t have chosen anyone better to begin our blogger series with – introducing Wendy Brandes, jewellery designer and blogger extraordinare.
Wendy began designing jewellery in 2004, after 15 years in media and marketing. She’s worked everywhere from the Wall Street Journal, to People.com, and now draws thousands of visitors to her personal blog.
What made you decide to start blogging?
I had been persuaded by a couple of fashion bloggers on whose blogs I had commented — especially Jennine of The Coveted and Independent Fashion Bloggers — that I should start my own blog to promote my jewelry.
I wasn’t entirely convinced, but on July 23, 2007, did write a placeholder post, saying I didn’t expect to have much to say right away.
Two days later, Britney Spears “borrowed” one of my rings from a photo shoot, which is definitely a story that needed to be shared with the world. After that, I was off and running.
What do you love most about fashion?
There’s always something new.
What fashion fad would you never wear?
I never say never.
Who are your favourite bloggers?
I have so many! I enjoy all the blogs I have on my blog roll. I spend the most real-life time with Jennine from The Coveted, ENC from Observationmode, Stacy from Taffeta Darlings, Tina from The Occasional Cook and La Belette Rouge.
Who (if any) are your style icons?
I wrote about one of them: New York’s ’80s It Girl Sally Randall. I also love the looks of Betty Boop, Jim Morrison and the Beatles in their Hamburg days.
Just some of Wendy’s designs – see more at her website.
What’s the best thing about being a blogger…
Getting to know great people and then meeting them in person.
…and the worst?
It takes up a lot of time. I used to be a journalist and my writing has to live up to my own standards. My post Get Smart (About Manufacturing) — one of my most popular posts — took over 12 hours to write. About eight of those hours were consecutive.
If you could sum up your style in three words, what would they be?
“Make them look.”
What’s your top fashion tip?
